The PCO 2 year course has been given a project, called the personal project. The personal project reflects the process instead of the outcome. This assigned task has to be completed with a final product within a span of 10 months.

The first step is to identify my Topic Of Interest (TOI). My chosen TOI is "How do i create clothes”. For me, it was not difficult to choose my TOI because I had some directions in life. I have learned some useful tips in business class that i want to put into practice in this assignment. Problems in society can be disguised as business opportunities. Hence, i went to investigate the problems. One problem that teenagers face is the high cost of clothing and apparels which can be extremely overrated due to the limited brands. On the other hand, i have researched that retail therapy is widely common amongst people. It is very helpful for a short period of time to ease stress or cure the broken hearted. I understood how retail therapy took one to another whole new level of happiness. Thus, because of that i want to use fashion to bring a smile to other.
The second step was to identify my Area of interaction. Teenagers usually have difficulties expressing how they feel and some resort to outwardly express their feelings through dressing. I absolutely understand what these youth are going through as i am also a teenager. Therefore, not only would i want to create clothes, i want to create a purpose too. With this, I can impact the society by creating and designing affordable clothes for them. Unable to understand clearly of my AO1, i used google to help me to have a better understanding. In reference to this, my A01 would have to be Human Ingenuity.
The definition of Human Ingenuity: it allows me to focus on the evolution, process and products of human creativity and their impact on life and society. Human ingenuity provides opportunities for me to appreciate and develop in them the human capacity to create, transform, enjoy and improve the quality of life.

I first created a timetable to plan and organize my time and day. It provides structure and allows me to have a sense of direction in my daily life. Using this timetable table helps me to focus and keep track of my goals and responsibilities. I then create a timeline for 10 months and broke it down as it would be easier for me to achieve my goals. After 10 months i will be able to design and sew apparel. The specifications of this product questions the durability, wearability and ability to sell and to fit at least one person. With that, i have to ask a few of my friends to try on my product and ask for their opinion. I'll collate it for reference to how i can better improve my product. Lastly, in class I did a short presentation about my personal project to help my classmates have a deeper understanding why I have chosen this topic. I carried out a presentation with a hand written script, and with it i knew what exactly to say as it boosted my confidence. No slides or power point presentation were included, nor any pictures or videos to highlight the essence of my personal project. However, i fell short on that. That was an area i think i will have to improve in, to be able to capture the audience’s attention by the help of visual aids.

Since, I was a child, my aspiration was to be a fashion designer. My source of inspiration would have to be my mom. My mom was once a fashion designer and she made a huge impact on me because her interest in art drove me to pursue this dream of mine. Planning and doing this project was hard work, to stay disciplined and abide by my aims and rationale. I drafted up a time table hoping that at the end of the day i would not feel like i have not achieved anything. I abided by the time table for the first few weeks but as the weeks go by i started to fall off track. Being able to come up with my timeline taught me the importance of recording the process of my product. By keeping track of my process helps remember my purpose and goals. Based on my presentation, i think it was a success because i was able to hide my discomfort from my teacher and classmates and did my best to speak in proper english. I personally think that Kaiying and Linh did an incredible job presenting. Kaiying spoke well with confidence. Linh on the other hand, had good prezi slides to get the audience’s attention. I learnt many things from them such as the importance of visual aids. It helps to capture the audience attention and help them to keep track what you are talking about and try to engage to the audience by looking at them and speak less monotonously.

I found pleasure in doing this assigned task because learning more about fashion is what I enjoy doing the most. Albeit having experience in art, I must admit this is not an easy project because i have no background in sewing and designing apparel. All these said, i think that 10 months is too short a period for me know everything about the fashion industry. For example, characteristics of fabrics and fashion history. However, i am willing to learn anything and everything i need to know about the fashion industry from scratch. I would do anything from purchasing more fashion magazines, studying the trends, sketching of models to achieve my goal. With my perseverance and hard work, i think i will be able to complete this personal project. From this personal project, i think that it has provided me with greater insights. I learn that many a time in life, it is not about the destination but the journey. The significance lies in the learning process rather than how we learn it. When we learn how we learn, we can achieve many things in life. Also, consistency in updating my process journal keeps track of my process to help me remember my purpose and goals. This project helped me to learn many characteristics like being responsibility in meeting datelines, patience when doing this assignment and hard work pays off well. Up to this point, i must say that i am proud to have come this far and to be able to complete my entire given urgency in meeting the dateline given.

Presentation speech

Today, I will be talking to you about the process of my personal project. We were given this project since August and we were instructed to create a journal in a form of a blog to keep track of our process.

We write in our blog from week to week. After the first week of school and many lessons, I have been told repeatedly learning is process- driven instead of result-driven. We always have the mindset of reaching the destination instead of the on-going journey. As humans, we usually focus on what we learn rather than how we learn it and when we learn it, we can achieve many things in life

So, my chosen topic of interest would be How Do I Create Clothes. My inspiration came from my mom because she had a huge interest in art. And when I was young, she used to spoil me with art classes and what ever art material i desired. My interest in art grew and art gave me another place to escape reality. I found joy in art. And ever since then, i wanted a profession in the art industry. My aspiration is to be a fashion designer. As you all know, retail therapy is widely common amongst people. It is very helpful for a short period of time to ease stress or cure the broken hearted. I did plenty of retail therapies and it really did help me because buying new clothes took me to another whole new level of happiness. And because of that i want to use fashion to bring smiles to others. Also, teenagers may feel like it’s hard to express themselves or finding an identity of their own and some resort to wearing how they feel. Hence, not only would i want to create clothes, i want to create a purpose too.
Hopefully, this will impact the society. In reference to this, my Area of Interest would have to be Human Ingenuity. The definition of human ingenuity is: allows one to focus on the evolution, process and products of human creativity and their impact on life and society. I guess it fits my purpose very well.

A timeline was created to remember my purpose and goals. Breaking down the timeline to smaller parts would be easier for me to achieve my goal. Therefore In 3 months time,my goal is to research and find out more about clothing materials and designs through the internet and magazines. In 6 months: Learn and sew an apparel. And in 10 months I have to produce an apparel.

The specifications of this product would have to be it’s durability - will it rip apart?, is it wearable?, would it be able to sell and it should be able to fit at least one person

I must admit this is not an easy project because i have no background in sewing. However, i am willing to learn anything and everything i need to know about the fashion industry from scratch. I would do anything from purchasing more fashion magazines, studying the trends, sketching of models to achieve my goal.

After hearing my presentation, I hope you have a clearer understanding of not only what I am doing but why am I doing this. Thank you.

Reflection and Presentation
1. How did i present my work? Explain whether you thought it was successful or if it needed more work.
I had a handwritten script while presenting. With the script, i knew what exactly to say and it boosted my confidence. No slides or powerpoint presentation were included, nor any pictures or videos to help me emphasis on my personal project. Hence, i felt i fall short on that. That was an area i think i will have to improved in. To be able to capture the audience attention by the help of visual aids. On the other hand, i think it was a success because i was able to hide my discomfort from my teacher and classmates and did my best to speak in proper english. Not only that, i only prepared the night before, to get the marks i got i must say i am pretty satisfied although i know that it is not the best of my ability.

2. What did i think of other's work? Pick out a few examples and explain how these examples supported your claims.
Well, i think that my class did a good job. However, i know that they could do a lot better. Maybe it was because no one actually took this presentation seriously. All we knew was part of our personal project. No one knew it was going to be graded.I think the two best presentation came from Kai Ying and Linh. They both had the help of visual aids to support their presentation, which i did not. Kai Ying spoke with confidence and that was what i admire about her. She appears not to be afraid of public speaking. She was able to tell everybody what she was doing for her personal project pretty cleary. I especially liked Linh's presentation. I found it easy to connect to what she was going to do for her personal project because she made it very clear to the class. She spoke in detailed and with proper english. But what i think they can improve on would be scripting out what to say instead of reading from the computer or the projector screen. But i still think they both did a great job.

3. How should i learn from other presentations on what to do or what not to do?
There are plenty things i have learn what i should do from other presentation. Firstly, creating visual aids, it helps to capture the audience attention and help them to keep track what you are talking about. Secondly, present detailedly, if not audience will be able to understand. Thirdly, speak with proper english. Fourthly, try to engage to the audience by looking at them and speak less monotonously. Lastly, do not go off track when answering the question given. If unable to understand, ask politely to repeat the question.

Articles

I have researched on two challenging articles to help me understand more about how people became fashion designers. I've researched on two top iconic fashion brands. Namely, Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent.

Chanel

CHANEL

ChanelA legendary name in fashion, Chanel is today synonymous both with its founder, Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel and its artistic director since 1983, Karl Lagerfeld. Chanel herself - who was born in an orphanage, was self-taught and who first established her house in 1913 - is perhaps the most important fashion designer of the 20th century. Her pioneering use of sportswear for high fashion in the '20s, her little black dresses, her costume jewellery, taste for suntanning and appropriation of male dress are the stuff of fashion legend. Her Chanel No. 5 perfume (invented in 1921), is a confirmed 'classic', as are her softly-structured tweed suit and quilted leather handbags (both developed in the '50s).
When Chanel died in 1971 she left a rich legacy of house codes which are today boldly reinvented by Karl Lagerfeld. Mademoiselle's favourite pearls turn up, outsized, as little evening bags; tweed is transformed into fluffy leggings and matching berets; a love of the sporty, outdoors life is expressed via Chanel-branded snowboards and surfboards. At Chanel, Lagerfeld heads up one of Paris' few remaining haute couture salons; in July 2002 the company, which is owned by the Wertheimer family, secured the future of its couture business by acquiring five specialist workshops, including Lesage, the prestigious embroidery com¬pany.
Chanel is today nothing if not a commercial powerhouse and in December 2004 the company opened a multi-floored new store in the Ginza shopping district of Tokyo that includes a restaurant, Beige Tokyo, and a glassy facade fitted with twinkling lights that resemble the brand's famous tweed. In May 2005 the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York opened an exhibition devoted toChanel's historic innovations, featuring designs by both the house founder and its present incumbent. Despite this grand heritage, what Coco and Lagerfeld have in common above all is relish for the present times and for the future. As Chanel herself once said, "I am neither in the past nor avant-garde. My style follows life."

Today, Chanel is an internationally iconic fashion brand and probably the most important fashion designer in the 20th century. Chanel was founded in 1983 by Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel and it's artistic director, Karl Lagerfeld. Chanel was an orphan, was self-taught and established her house in the 1913. In the early 20s, she started by using sportswear as high fashion, classy black dress, costumed jewellery, taste for suntanning and appropriation of male wear.  Not only did she design apparels, in the 50s she developed her range of perfumes and collection of handbags. Chanel was a trendsetter.
However, Chanel died in 1971. Leaving Karl Lagerfeld a huge sum of inheritance. Lagerfeld took over Chanel and reinvented her previous designs. In December 2004, Chanel opened a multi-floored new store in Tokyo that includes a restaurant. If not for the commercial powerhouse, Chanel will not be what it is today. Coco and Lagerfeld has something in common which is designing likings for the present and the future. Chanel's words of wisdom "I am neither in the past nor avant-garde. My style follows life"

YVES SAINT LAURENT RIVE GAUCHE

Yves Saint Laurent Rive GaucheIn October 2004, Milanese designer Stefano Pilati presented his First collection for Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche. Featuring cute polka dot mini dresses with tulip hemlines and waists cinched with wide patent belts, Pilati's debut was both a clean break from the sexed-up vision Tom Ford had developed for Yves Saint Laurent, and something of a tribute to the '80s collections by Saint Laurenthimself, who retired from fashion in 2003.
Saint Laurent, who was born in Algeria in 1936, is one of the most important designers of the 30th century and takes the credit for numerous innovations in fashion, such as sheer clothing, le smoking, peasant-inspired designs, safari suits and pussy-bow blouses. He was also one of the first couturiers to embrace ready-to-wear fashion, launching his Rive Gaucheshops in 1966.
In 1998 Saint Laurent and his longtime business partner Pierre Berge chose Alber Elbaz as the designer of Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche, but he was replaced by Ford a few years later following the Gucci Group's purchase of the YSL ready-to-wear business in 1999. When Ford exited the Gucci Group in 2004, Pilati succeeded him at YSL.
Pilati grew up in Milan sketching outfits and stealing his sister's copies of Vogue magazine. In the early '80s, he abandoned a course in environmental design and landed an internship at Nino Cerruti. Over the following years, he immersed himself in the business of fashion until in 1993 he was hired as a menswear assistant at Giorgio Armani. Two years later, he joined Prada and began to work on research and development of textiles; by 1998 Pilati was assistant designer of Miu Miu menswear and womenswear, reporting directly to Miuccia Prada. In 2000 Tom Ford appointed Pilati as design director of Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche, where he quickly rose to a position overseeing all product categories. He now helms one of the most iconic brands in French fashion. "When I first fell in love with fashion, it was obvious that Mr. Saint Laurent was the master," Pilati has said.

Timeline

Topic of interest: How to create clothing
Area of Interaction: Human Ingenuity

The personal project taught me how important it is to record your process of your product. By keeping track of my process helps remember my purpose and goals. Breaking down the timeline to smaller parts would be easier for me to achieve my goal.

This is what i want to achieve in..
3 months: Research and find out more about clothing materials and designs through the internet and magazines
6 months: Learn and sew an apparel
10 months: An apparel

Specifications of the product:
1) Durability - will it rip apart?
2) Wearable
3) Able to sell
4) It be able to fit at least one person

I must admit this is not an easy project because i have no background in sewing. However, i am willing to learn anything and everything i need to know about the fashion industry from scratch. I would do anything from purchasing more fashion magazines, studying the trends, sketching of models to achieve my goal.

A01: Human ingenuity

How did i figured my A01?
The role model of my life would have to be my mom. My mom has a huge interest in art and when i was young, she used to spoil me with art classes and what ever art material i desired. My friends would look at me with envy with my pencil case filled with coloured markers or the new set of crayons i get every year for art lessons. My interest in art increased and art gave me another place to escape reality and it taught me several things in life. I found joy in the art pieces i created. And ever since then, i wanted a profession in the art industry. My aspiration is to be a fashion designer. What i could impact the society is creating a local brands for teenagers to express how the feel by the way the they dress.

In reference to this, my A01 would have to be Human Ingenuity.
Definition of Human Ingenuity: it allows me to focus on the evolution, process and products of human creativity and their impact on life and society. Human ingenuity provides opportunities for me to appreciate and develop in themselves the human capacity to create, transform, enjoy and improve the quality of life.

Time table

Creating a time table provides structure. It allows you to have a sense of direction in your daily life. Using a time table helps you to focus and keeps track of goals and responsibilities. I've set targets and goals when i creating this table and i will be accountable for them. This will also help me to prioritize
time, so that at the end of the day i would not feel like i have not achieved anything.

Formula for achieving goals:
If this is what i want to achieve, i would put in effort to do it and if this is what i want to do then i will get it.

The three main questions for setting goals:
1. What are my goals ?
  •  To have a balanced life.

I have difficulty keeping a balanced life because it's hard for me to juggle two distinctive sets of duties. For example: days nearing examination, I'll put fun and relaxation time aside and concentrate entirely on studying. Therefore in my timetable, i balanced my playing and revision time.

  • Prioritize my time and responsibilities in life

- God
Going to church on Friday nights, Sunday mornings and doing my daily quiet time is essential if not i'll grow further away from God. Making me feel emptier day by day.
- Family & Friends
Making time for my family and friends is important to me because they are always there for me to share my joy or when i need a shoulder to cry on or a hug to make me feel a whole lot better. They play a significant role in my life.
- Studies
It is necessary to do well in my studies as it determines my future. In my time table, i have added revision time.
- Sleep
As a growing teenager  i have to say that sleep is important. With the lack of sleep, falling ill is easy and sleeping in class will be a huge factor because paying attention in class would be difficult. Hence, the latest time i would go to bed on a week day would be at 12 am.

2. How can i keep myself accountable and follow my daily timetable?
  • Do not compromise
- Follow my schedule strictly and do not compromise with my friends when they ask me out. And if i lose track of time and miss certain activities, i will just follow according to the time. I will not make up for it.
  • Put away my phone when it's revision time
  • Take away luxuries as punishment
- Take away computer time
- Punish myself by not having meals till i finish my task

Learning how to learn

What do you understand now by " learning how to learn " ?

After the first week of school and many lessons, I have been told repetitively learning is process-driven instead of result-driven. We always have the mindset of reaching the destination instead of the journey. We usually focus on what we learn rather than how we learn it. When we learn how to learn, we can achieve many things in life. We'll see things from another perspective and not be surfaced thinkers instead, we will think deeper thinkers. Breaking things down into simple parts will help individuals see the progress of the process. So, this is what i learn about myself and how i learn things.

Topic of Interest

My topic of interest would be How Do I Create Clothes

Why would you be interested in that topic? What inspires and motivates you?
I am absolutely interested in this topic because since i was a child i was always into fashion. When i was young, this thought of mine was just a make believe. I cut paper dresses for my dolls, did up my doll's hair, prepared them for a fashion shows. Retail therapy is widely common amongst people. It is very helpful for a short period of time to ease stress or cure the broken hearted. I did plenty of retail therapies and it really did help me because buying new clothes took me to another whole new level of happiness. And because of that i want to use fashion to bring a smiles to others Well now, i'm all grown up i have could have a choice to decide for my future and this would be it, being a fashion designer.

My inspiration would have to be my mom. She was once a fashion designer. I would go to her cupboard to take peeps at her sketches and i will always be filled with admiration.
What motivates me to chase this dream is seeing Singapore having limited clothing choices. The two problems teenagers would face is the high cost of clothing and apparels can be extremely overrated due to the limited brands. Teenagers usually have difficulty expressing how they feel and some resort to wearing how they feel. Hence, not only would i want to create clothes, i want to create a purpose too.

What do you think is the difference between learning and doing? How do you know?
There is a difference between learning and doing. Almost the same concept as listening and hearing. Here is one analogy you may hear but you may not grasp anything. Things the other party is saying would just be like a passing wind. Where else when you listen, you'll understand completely the message. If you do and not learn is doing something blindly. Like what i learned in English class "Learning is process-driven and not results driven" Here's another analogy, is not about the destination is about the journey.

Which A01 will you be interested in? Why?
I am interested in A014 : Human Ingenuity. This area of interaction allows us to find out problems and solve them which is some what similar as my motivation. The problem: lack or clothing brands. The range of popular brands in Singapore would most likely be Forever 21, Topshop, Cotton on, River Island, Bershka, Zara. While in America it's so much cheaper and there are tons of other popular brands. How do i want to solve this problems? To create another brand and produce less overrated and more affordable clothes for teenagers. How am i going to do this? Start by studying clothes design, researching on the latest fashion, learning how to design and sew.
